Getting Married at Riddle's Court

From being built in the late 16th century to being restored by the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust in 2017, Riddle’s Court is no stranger to a long and tumultuous history. In the current climate, the events team is looking to see how it can still develop unique weddings in the safest way possible for its couples and our guests.

Whether you are looking for a traditional elegant event or a more intimate and relaxed celebration, Riddle’s Court has many options to consider. And when you book your wedding at Riddle’s Court, you contribute to the legacy of Scotland’s rich heritage. All profits are reinvested into those beautiful historic buildings restored by Scottish Historic Buildings Trust.

There’s no one ‘typical’ way to have a wedding at Riddle’s Court. Whether you’re looking for a ceremony, a drinks reception, a meal, a ceilidh, a disco or a combination of the above, the events team will be happy and willing to help make your wedding dream a reality.

The diverse range of rooms are perfect for all your different needs and visions, and accommodating smaller weddings in such beautiful historic spaces helps add to over 400 years of vibrant history.

Ceremony in the Geddes Room at Riddle's Court

For smaller weddings, the intimacy of our historic first floor rooms creates an ideal environment for the exchanging of vows. However, if the brightness and airy feel of the Library Room catches your eye then your ceremony could easily be accommodated beneath its stunning chandeliers.

A typical wedding ceremony will welcome up to 60 guests in the Geddes Room or the Library Room, and up to 20 in the Seton Room. However, the implementation of social distancing measures does have a significant impact on these numbers. Depending on the distances and total guest numbers advised, capacities can vary from 4 to about 40 guests. Please do contact a member of the team for more information on celebrations that adhere to current social distancing measures.

With experience in hosting elopements, the team at Riddle’s Court is as comfortable planning a small wedding as it is a larger celebration. Two witnesses can be provided in the event that you want your day to be as intimate as just you and your partner. The stunning Seton Room, with its cosy window booths, is perfect for a romantic elopement.

For those that can’t be with you the next best option may be to make use of the services of one of Riddle’s Court’s preferred suppliers and have your special day streamed live, including guests unable to attend the big day. Or, why not record your ceremony with a trusted videographer partner and come back to Riddle’s Court for a screening at a later date?

Typically, with smaller numbers for private dining, the Geddes Room on the first floor provides an ideal private setting to enjoy a fine dining experience. Originally a dining room for university accommodation in the 19th Century, the fantastic painted ceiling is the ideal talking point for your guests.

With social distancing measures, it may be that your meal is best suited in the Library Room, where a larger number of guests could be safely accommodated.

Once you have decided on the numbers and format of your celebration, you can get in contact with one of the approved caterers to discuss your catering requirements. All caterers are obviously having to look at their menu offerings and how they ensure safety in preparation and delivery of their food offering.

If you’ve decided to forge ahead and get married with a smaller ceremony, it may be an idea to consider how best to celebrate with your loved ones. Seated drinks receptions are on offer following your ceremony, either in our first floor suite or in the Library Room, depending on your guest numbers.

Alternatively, you have the option to spread out your celebration! You can book a date further on down the line for your reception, meal and party when guests won’t be restricted by the current measures in place.

Or, if you’re looking for something a little different, why not ask us about our filming capabilities and organise a screening of the ceremony for all your loved ones? To make a reception even more special, consider an affirmation or renewing your vows – ask your celebrant, minister or other officiant what your options would be later on!

If you’re celebrating with us, whether for your ceremony, reception, or any combination that works best for your wedding, Riddle’s Court can provide accommodation for you or your guests.

The King’s Chamber, our luxury onsite apartment, is a historic gem located within Edinburgh’s last remaining merchant’s house on the Royal Mile. The bedroom, with its 16th century painted beams, was once the hall in which King James VI of Scotland hosted a royal dinner party for the Duke of Holstein. It is now part of a bright, warm and comfortable apartment with a tasteful mix of traditional and modern furnishings.
